Edith Shain
is the nurse in the imfamous LIFE Magazine photo of the sailor
kissing the nurse in Times Square, 1945. The picture was taken
by renowned photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt, and has become one
of the most recognizable photos of the 20th century. It has come
to symbolize the end of WWII and the beginning of the Baby Boomer
generation. It has appeared on the front of LIFE Magazine more
than any other photo. |
Edith was working
at Doctor's Hospital in New York City when she and a friend heard
on the radio that WWII had ended. They went to Times Square where
all the celebrating was and as soon as she got off the subway,
the sailor grabbed |
and kissed her. She
thought she might as well let him kiss her since he fought for
her in war.
Edith was born in 1919
and currently lives in Southern California where she actively
participates in parades and public events commemorating veterans.
She is writing her biography which captures the famous day in
history and her secrets to longevity which includes a healthy
diet and good attitude. She recently received a proclamation
from the President of the United States recognizing her as a
symbol of world peace.
